Mark Ellis, Ph.D.

Mark Ellis, Ph.D., oversees the foremost international organization of bar associations, law firms and lawyers in the world at the International Bar Association. A frequent speaker and media commentator on international legal issues, he appears regularly on CNN International, Al Jazeera and BBC, in addition to publishing extensively on international humanitarian law, war crime tribunals and the development of the rule of law. He served as legal advisor to the Independent International Commission on Kosovo, chaired by Justice Richard J. Goldstone and was appointed by the OSCE to advise on the creation of Serbia’s War Crimes Tribunal. He was actively involved with the Iraqi War Crimes Tribunal and also acted as legal advisor to the defense team of Nuon Chea at the Cambodian War Crimes Tribunal (ECCC). In 2013, Dr. Ellis was admitted to the List of Assistants to Counsel of the International Criminal Court.

After receiving his bachelor’s degree and juris doctor from FSU, Dr. Ellis earned a doctorate in law from King’s College in London, and is twice a Fulbright Scholar at the Economic Institute in Zagreb, Croatia. He received the FSU Grad Made Good Award in 1998, a special honor from the FSU Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa and FSU Alumni Association for alumni who have made a significant difference through outstanding success in their chosen fields. He also received the 2013 Distinguished Alumni Award from FSU’s College of Social Sciences and Public Policy and the 2014 FSU Torch Award.

Dr. Ellis is a member of the Council of Foreign Relations and serves on the editorial boards for the Journal of National Security Law and Policy and The Hague Journal on the Rule of Law. He has served on the FSU Law School Alumni Board for more than five years and remains committed to teaching at FSU, where he is currently an adjunct professor of law, and giving back to his alma mater.
