Captain Tom Hynes is a native of Miami, Florida. He graduated from FSU with a bachelor’s in science in 1980. He went on to earn his wings from the U.S. Navy in 1982 and was assigned to fly on the USS Nimitz. While in the Navy, he became a Landing Signal Officer (LSO) and flew the E-2C Hawkeye and F-14 Tomcat. He then served as a jet instructor pilot/LSO in Pensacola flying the T-2C Buckeye and TA-4J Skyhawk jet trainers.
Captain Hynes was hired by American Airlines in 1987 and was initially based in Chicago. After joining American, he remained in the Navy flying the C-9 for the Naval Reserve at NAS Glenview and in support of Operation Desert Storm. After retiring from the Navy Reserve, he moved back to Miami with American Airlines and was promoted to captain on the 727 in 1999. Tom spent 10 years in flight management as Chief Pilot of the Miami Base. In May 2006, he was appointed managing director of flight for the Miami, Caribbean and Latin America Division. He is currently a captain on the 757 and 767 out of Miami. Captain Hynes has also flown as an air show demonstration pilot for seven years and has been the captain on the Miami Dolphin Charter Flights for the last 13 seasons.
He and his wife, Leonor (B.S. '80), have been married more than 30 years and currently live in Weston, Florida. Their son, Christopher, graduated from FSU in 2007 with a business degree and was a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. Their daughter, Tara, graduated in 2010 with a degree in nursing and was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. All four family members are proud to be Seminoles.
