Michael J. Sweeney, M.D., M.B.A., is a graduate of FSU’s Program in Medical Sciences, the predecessor to the College of Medicine, and practiced for years as a vascular and general surgeon in Fort Myers, Florida. His education includes a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Florida, a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of South Florida and surgical training at the Ochsner Medical Institutions in New Orleans. In 2009, he joined the FSU faculty and currently serves as an associate professor in the College of Medicine as well as the Residency Program in General Surgery, and is a member of the Graduate Teaching Faculty of the College of Business. He was elected to the FSU Alumni Association National Board of Directors on June 22, 2013 and elected to the position of Secretary in 2018.
Since graduating from FSU, he has become a member of Seminole Boosters and the FSU Foundation’s Presidents Club, a longtime member of the FSU College of Arts and Sciences Leadership Council and founding chair of the FSU Medical Alumni Board of Directors. He was selected as the graduate of distinction from the College of Arts and Sciences in 2011, Outstanding Senior Faculty Educator for 2017-2018 by the medical school faculty council, and chosen as the commencement speaker by the College of Medicine Class of 2018.
He currently teaches clinical sciences and anatomy to first- and second-year medical students and serves on a number of committees within the College of Medicine and, in 2017, he added the role of Education Director for Surgery. His second career in medical education is a job he says has helped him to reconnect with and give back to FSU in a unique way.
Dr. Sweeney is joined by his wife, Jan, and four children as proud FSU alumni and devoted Seminoles.
