Diane Ervin earned her master’s degree from Florida State University’s College of Information in 1972 and later completed her Doctor of Education at the University of South Carolina in 1989. She built a distinguished career as a school media specialist in South Carolina public schools, serving until her retirement in 1998. During that time, she was an active leader in the South Carolina Association of School Librarians (SCASL), chairing the Regional Network and the Children’s Book Award Committee and serving as president in 1985. Her service was recognized with the SCASL President’s Award in 1996 and the Distinguished Service Award in 1998.
Following her first retirement, Ervin worked as an independent sales representative for several library publishing companies, earning recognition as a member of the Sales Team of the Year for Marshall Cavendish in 2007. Since 2012, she has served as executive secretary of SCASL.
A devoted Seminole, Ervin served on the FSU Alumni Association National Board of Directors (2006-2011), chairing the Alumni Center Activities and Programs Committee for much of that time. In 2012, she received the prestigious Circle of Gold Award. She led the Upper South Carolina Seminole Club for many years and was instrumental in securing the South Carolina FSU license tag, which supports scholarships for South Carolina students attending FSU—her own car proudly bears “FS 1.” She and her husband, Doug, have also made a deferred gift to support the School of Information at the College of Communication and Information.
Diane is part of the inaugural class of Alumni Association Ambassadors, fondly nicknamed the “Tribal Elders,” and continues to champion Florida State in South Carolina and beyond.
