Haney helped create the Noles MD program for the FSU Boosters and was instrumental in forming the Florida Alliance for Sports Medicine (FASMed), a statewide organization of orthopedic surgeons that promotes safety for Florida athletes. He has served on the boards of the United Way of the Big Bend and the Tallahassee Memorial Hospital Foundation Board.

Since retiring, Haney enjoys fishing, playing golf and traveling with his wife, Wendy Walker.
